Tasty Tuesday: Billy Mac's Bar and Grill

EUGENE, Ore. - Billy Mac's Bar and Grill has only been around for a little more than 2 years.

However, chef and owner, Bill McCallum, has been in kitchens for around 30 years.

McCallum first started cooking back in 1977 at his fathers place, The Tree House Restaurant, right here in Eugene.

Since then he has made a name for himself with Billy Mac's, 605 W. 19th, a joint he describes as being Northwest Cuisine with a French flair.

From the entrees to the baguettes, McCallum does pretty much everything right in the restaurants kitchen himself.

He said that making everything fresh with as many local ingredients as he can not only results in a better product, but it also saves a little money - something he can transfer on to the customers.

Although, when it really comes down to it, the real reason for all the hard work is McCallum's passion for food.

In the video below McCallum demonstrates a simple chicken marinade.

$4.20: Gas prices in Eugene top Oregon and US averages

EUGENE, Ore. - OK, drivers: what's the difference between $3.73 and $4.20 per gallon for gas?

a. 47 cents

b. the amount Eugene motorists are paying for a gallon of gas, above the national average.

c. All of the above

How do you like that?

"It's definitely hard," said Isabella Haitsma of Eugene, Ore. "Takes most of my paycheck."

Gas prices are soaring in Oregon but holding steady in the rest of the county.

Why are Oregon and Northwest drivers feeling so much pain at the pump?

A motorcyclist Monday at the 76 station at 29th and Willamette, told KVAL, "To be honest, I don't think about it that much; it's just the way it is."

Average Eugene retail prices climbed 19 cents last week to an average $4.20 a gallon.

That's 3-cents above the state average price for unleaded and it's 23 cents per gallon higher than the same week one year ago.

Meeting May 22 on Amazon Drive improvements

A neighborhood open house has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 22, to discuss walking and biking improvements for East and West Amazon Drive (from Hilyard Street to Snell Street).

The city is preparing a grant application to improve bicycle facilities and install pedestrian crossings of Amazon Creek.

Design options may include buffering the existing bike lanes or installing a two-way bike facility on one side of the Amazon Parkway.

The meeting will also discuss extending the Amazon Path south to Tugman Park along Hilyard Street.

Choir theft strikes sour chord

EUGENE, Ore. - A south Eugene church found out the hard way Wednesday night that nothing is sacred when you're a thief.

Imagine you're from an out-of-state church choir, in to Eugene to perform a concert.  While you're performing upstairs in the sanctuary, a thief breaks in to the church and rifles through your purses to get your cash.

That's what happened at Cascade Presbyterian Church.

As the California Baptist University choir delivered songs of inspiration, there were sour notes downstairs.

"Their wallets had been broken into; someone had gotten into all the rooms and taken $1,900 of cash," said Cascade's music director Davina Perret.

Perret explained only the front door of the church was open and all other outside doors were locked.

They decided to store the choir members purses in the Sunday school rooms.  "But we didn't lock the doors downstairs.  Didn't even think we needed to lock doors, we're at a church," said Perret.

Officer Chris Kilcullen honored

SALEM, Ore. -- Family members of Chris Kilcullen attended a service at the Oregon Fallen Law Officer's Memorial Tuesday in Salem. The family members were accompanied by representatives from the Eugene Police Department as Officer Kilcullen's name was added to the memorial wall.

This honor comes just two weeks after the one-year anniversary of his death.

Every May, the Oregon Fallen Law Enforcement Ceremony honors law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The memorial is at the Oregon Public Safety Academy in Salem.

This year three names were added to the wall. Also added to the memorial were Oregon Department of Corrections Officer Buddy Ray Herron and Lake County Sheriff's Officer Samuel J. Lewis. A retired Texas Sheriff researching line-of-duty deaths discovered that Officer Lewis died in 1882 guarding a prisoner in Klamath Falls from a lynch mob.

Sorenson and Stahl in Lane Commissioner face-off

EUGENE, Ore. - It's a forest activist versus a four term veteran for a seat on the Lane County Commission.

Pete Sorenson and Andy Stahl have until May 15 to sway last minute voters. Stahl said it's time for a change on the county board. Pete Sorenson is asking voters for a fifth term to the courthouse.

Both say they have the best answer to fix the county's financial free-fall.

Andy Stahl's old Eugene street map is getting a little worn.  "Then I took my little pen and I said--okay, I've done those streets," explained Stahl, showing reporter Tom Adams pen lines tracing the many streets he has walked in the campaign.

Pete Sorenson may need new shoes, after he told KVAL, "We've been door-belling since January 2011."  It's a sprint to the finish.

Forest politics have split these two liberal candidates. Conservationist Stahl said a bill from Congressman Peter DeFazio is the best shot to help the bleeding county budget.
